Happy National Ice Cream Day!
OK, so I'm a little late for National Ice Cream Day. It was actually July 19, but ice cream is good any day, right? If you're read Death of an Idiot Boss, you may remember the scene where Kadence and Dominic are on the back porch cranking an old fashioned hand cranked ice cream freezer full of creamy goodness. If just the thought of homemade ice cream got your mouth to watering, here's my momma's recipe so that you can make a freezer full of your very own.

Ice Cream Custard
2 cans evaporated milk
2 cans whole milk
2 cans heavy cream
6 egg yolks
2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons vanilla extract
Heat milk to scalding
Beat egg yolks until they start to thicken, about 5 minutes, then add sugar and beat for 5 more minutes until mixture thickens more
Gradually add the scalded milk to the thickened eggs, a little at a time. Don’t add too quickly or the eggs will cook .
Once all the milk has been added into the egg mixture, put it back into the pan and cook, but don’t let it boil or it will curdle
When it's thick, let it cool some then put into the refrigerator. Cover it with a piece of wax paper or saran wrap so a crust doesn’t form. It needs to stay in the refrigerator at least 3 or 4 hours before you try to freeze it
Add the vanilla right before you freeze
Pour the custard into the nearest ice cream freezer, electric or hand cranked your choice. Freeze and enjoy the creamy goodness.
